ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK  –  Stan Fox, Club Member since 1987

Stan Fox was born in Savannah, GA and grew up in coastal South Carolina, in a small, nearly 400-year-old town called Beaufort, “Queen of the Carolina Sea Islands”.  The town was awakened from its slumber by its use as the setting for such films as The Big Chill, The Great Santini, Prince of Tides and Forrest Gump.  Stan’s father was “THE” jeweler (Watchmaker, Hand-Engraver, Gemologist) in Beaufort for nearly 50 years, and Fox Jewelers appeared in a several of those films.

Stan came to Los Angeles to meet a fraternity brother who had moved to L.A. from Atlanta.  He arranged a blind date for Stan with a Santa Monica girl (Karen) he had met.  They hit it off and continued to see each other when possible.  They were married two days after his discharge from the Air Force and moved into a small Santa Monica apartment.  That was 1966, but Karen’s family had lived in Santa Monica since the 1920s.

While in school, Stan worked in his father-in-law’s retail shoe business in Santa Monica. In  1978, Stan purchased two laundromats in Santa Monica and later expanded the business to four locations.  He is still in the laundry business, but has downsized to a single location.

Karen was a LAUSD classroom teacher for 36 years before retiring but returned to work for LAUSD as a consultant for nearly two more decades. That ended with the COVID outbreak and she has now retired completely.

Stan and Karen have three adult children and a nine-year-old granddaughter who all have homes in Santa Monica.  Karen, their children, and granddaughter were all born in Santa Monica and have never considered anywhere else home.  Two of their children are attorneys, whereas the third decided to go right to work upon graduation from U.C. Berkeley.  He is the Director of Sales for a world-wide housewares manufacturer.  Their daughter is a lawyer in a Century City firm, and their other son is a partner in a large U.S. firm, but most of his practice is in Asia.  Though he lives in Tokyo much of year, he also maintains a home in Santa Monica, and spends a great deal of time here.
