ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK

Donna Hackney – Club Member Since 2020

Background/professional life: Donna was born in Blue Earth, Minnesota, and attended Ralston High School in Omaha, Nebraska. She raised four children in Phoenix, AZ, where she started and co-managed three successful HVAC companies. Donna renovated several luxury homes in Phoenix, one of which was featured on HGTV. She has a real estate license and specializes in commercial real estate. For the past ten years, she’s called Santa Monica home.

Outreach: Giving birth to her fourth child at home in a birthing tub surrounded by family kindled a passion for supporting women and their families from pregnancy through postpartum. She worked closely with a midwife and became certified as a Birth & Postpartum Doula. Being a doula further opened Donna’s eyes to the inherent beauty surrounding pregnancy, birth, and families, which inspired her to become a professional photographer focused on pregnancy, delivery, and, of course, newborn babies.

After many years focused solely on birth, her interests broadened to Hospice care. She volunteered for several non-profit hospice organizations over the years and is currently certifying to become a death midwife, so she can help people who are in the process of dying.

Interests:  Presently, her creative focus is on ceramics. Donna has found art to be particularly therapeutic during the pandemic. She joined Still Life Studios in Santa Monica last September and has had fun playing in the mud ever since! Donna joined Rotary after meeting several members of the Santa Monica Club on the Humanitarian trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, in 2020. She is engaged to Michael Lushing, Immediate Past President of the Beverly Hills Rotary Club.
