RotaMonica #40
President’s Message:

We had another exciting meeting this week starting off with an interactive invocation from Past President Mitchell Kraus sharing three riddles about what he thinks makes Rotary so special.
•    (Riddle 1) What is something that you can give freely but cannot buy? Answer is friendship.
•    (Riddle 2) You can find me in moment, in activity you’re doing.  I can be contagious, and I can make time fly.  What am I? Answer is having fun.
•    I am not alive, but I can make a big difference in the world.  What am I?  Answer is a charitable donation – Philanthropy.  He finished his invocation with as we gather to hear about the wetlands, remember my three F’s of Rotary – Fun, Friendship and Philanthropy.
We welcomed our newest Rotarian, Andrew Thomas, he is the Director of Downtown Santa Monica a 501c3 Non-Profit.
Past President Paul Leoni was fined $200.00 because he accepted an award from the Santa Monica Breakfast Club. Paul and his late wife, Marilyn, were honored at the 7th Annual “Mad Hatter Tea Party” on Sunday, April 16th. Rotary had an overwhelming presence including Past Presidents, Bill Werner, Dick Lawrence,
George Collins, Lisa Alexander, Spyros Dellaportas and Dee Menzies. V.P. Pam Brady, Donna Byrd, Allan Young and other friends of Paul and Marilyn.
Fines were levied on two of our Past Presidents -Mitchell Kraus who took his family to a pig restaurant while on vacation in Japan. (Fine $25.00)

Neysa Frechette, Manager of Scientific Programs for Friends of Ballona Wetlands, was our speaker at our meeting this past week. She shared how the Friends of Ballona Wetlands is championing the restoration and protection of Los Angeles’ last coastal wetland and educating their diverse community as stewards of nature.
She shared the history of the Ballona Wetlands and the plans as well as efforts already taken for a continued restoration of the area. We discovered how tidal flushing revives the Pickleweed Saltmarsh She shared slides of the restoration efforts in the Ballona Freshwater Marsh System. They plant natives to support wildlife.
This was an important meeting for all in attendance as we were given the insight to help all to be more prudent in our efforts to preserve our planet.
