Sunday, evening March 21, 2004, at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, before an audience of fifteen hundred, the Santa Monica Symphony performed Mahler's Fifth Symphony with a rousing performance.
Conductor Allen Gross and his wonderful musicians obviously delighted the house with a stirring high quality rendition of Mahler's work, as evidenced by more than five curtain calls while the orchestra received a thunderous standing ovation. Rotary Night at the Santa Monica Symphony was a success, in large measure, due to the invitation of Symphony Friends, Chair, Mahnaz Newman to our Club President, Dee Menzies to join her along with other Rotarians at the Symphony and to also be guests of the Symphony Association at a post concert reception at Le Merigot Hotel. It was a great sight to see fellow Rotarians interacting with the conductor and members of the orchestra as well as other Friends of the Santa Monica Symphony. Everyone had a wonderful time and there was talk about making Rotary Night at the Symphony an annual event.
