"Don't worry about the world coming to an end today ... It's already tomorrow in Australia." Charles Schultz!
Sally Young, from the Santa Monica YWCA, got out meeting started with a moving invocation that was followed by a number of introductions of visiting Rotarians. In addition to our more local visitors, the club also entertained visitors from Germany and Angola.
The Scholarship and Youth Committee gave out a variety of scholarships and awards to area youth this month. Those awards included three citizenships awards and 10 scholarships. two grants were also awarded this week. One to the YWCA, to help with renovations on their community room that is used for childcare and one to the Red Cross of Santa Monica for equipment to be used with their new Nurse Assistant Vocational Training program.
Among the announcements of special note was a reminder of the “dethroning party” for our president on Friday, June 24 and a request from your fill in “Rotamonica reporter” for members to sign up to provide gifts for member birthdays. If you have 10-15 items, (average number of club member birthdays per month) you can call me at 394-3773 to sign up for a month. We have 7 months open.
The guest speaker today was Dr Jayson Hymes, Medical Director for the Conservative care Specialists Medical Group. The topic was Pain Management. Dr Hymes pointed out that there were three aspects to pain management which are; what pain is, what are the current treatments and what’s new in pain management. The Dr. pointed out that there are two components to pain, a physical and a psychological aspect and that the two interact. Complete pain management often involves understanding and dealing with both components. In addition to the usual treatment regimes like medications, physical therapy and surgery, Dr Hymes pointed out that treatment is also commonly provided by masseuses, acupressure and acupuncturists, psychologists utilizing bio feed back and chiropractors.
A little known fact is that over 50% of chiropractic visits involve the management of pain.
Current treatment modalities involve a more comprehensive approach that has become better known as “pain management”. A variety of new treatments are under development including newer arthritic pain relievers like Viox and other drugs on the horizon include topical creams and patches that can target specific problem areas.
In addition to arthritis, headaches and spinal problems are also receiving increased attention. In fact Dr Hymes noted that lower back pain is the most common cause of sustained work loss for American employers.
Dr Hymes concluded his talk by pointing out that while a variety of treatments are now available for the management of pain, caution is still called for and cited the proliferation of internet available drugs that are under scrutiny by law enforcement.

"Thanks, Rotary, for fighting polio: Next, please take on HIV"
It is a most remarkable case of serendipity. In 1979, members of Rotary clubs, a
staple of small town life, were collecting donations for famine relief. Among
the pledges were offers of childhood vaccines. Several countries, including
Canada, offered polio vaccine in addition to food aid. A Rotary member in the
Philippines, where polio was rampant, asked that the vaccine be put to good
use. He rallied fellow Rotarians, and lobbied government and international
health organizations; soon, six million Filipino children were vaccinated.
Enjoy the little things for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.
