Rotary Club of Santa Monica

Meetings and Pictures

July/August 2004

According to Lionel's Ruhmanisms for lunch on 8/27/04 the correct pronunciation of Vince Muselli is Vince "Moose"sally.
Our speaker for lunch was Ralph Pezzullo. Mr. Pezzullo  is an award-winning playwright, screenwriter and copywriter as well as a published author.  He talked to us about Communication Gaps between the USA and Third World Countries.

Our Hidden Cameras "See" Dr. Jay Gross

We were very pleased when we finally got a picture of one of Santa Monica's best Ophthalmologists Jay Gross. Jay is not only a great Doctor, he is also an expert in fashion. Aren't those suspenders stylish?

Craft talkers  Petra Haffter and  Klaus Mennekes  were our speakers for lunch on 8/20/04

As a little girl growing up in a small German village that faced the ocean, Petra dreamed of being a pirate and a detective, not at all to make movies. She used to stare at the ocean liners in the harbor and dreamt that one day a ship would take her far away.
Well, Petra fulfilled her dream. She did indeed move to a place far from home (Los Angeles) about seven years ago, and now lives in a residence not far from the Pacific Ocean.
Her hard work and dedication helped her to become an award-winning director, writer, and producer. Petra had the club laughing when she showed us a minute or two of her only short film: Confessions of a Shoe Fetishist.
     Petra, welcome to our club!

Our second craft talker of the day was also born in Germany. Klaus took up hotel management in college and went on to manage many hotels across the globe. Klaus shared some humorous anecdotes of the fantasy life that managing some of the fancier hotels can become. While working in Hong Kong, he was allowed to drive the boss’s Rolls Royce and was treated like a king. He was advised by a mentor at the time to move on because working at the fancy hotel in Hong Kong was not the real world.
One day while working in Japan, Klaus followed an old Japanese custom of making a wish when he caught a glimpse of the top of Mount Fuji unobstructed by cloud cover. He had recently interviewed for a job to manage a hotel in Santa Monica, and Klaus wished that he would get the job. To make a long story short, he returned to the U.S. to find out that he was offered the job, and has been successfully managing local hotels ever since.
In conclusion, Klaus said that he is now enjoying his second childhood. He enjoys riding motorcycles and skateboards, sports an earring, and describes himself as “one cool dude.”
   Klaus, welcome to our club!

One Cool Dude!

A New Song leader is Born!

Say hello to one of our newest members Dr. Joyce Stoops. Joyce got up and led us in songs for the day. I can tell talent when I hear it. All I can say is watch out Phil Tirone you now have some major competition!

Nanci Linke-Ellis, Executive Director of TRIPOD Captioned Films, was our guest speaker for Friday 8/13/04

Lionel's Ruhmanisms: According to Lionel Kris Andresen is pronounced "Kim Andersen".

Nanci explained how her organization helps to provide screenings of major motion pictures with captions for the deaf and hard of hearing.

New Members Welcome!

David Bohn (left) welcomes our newest member John Dravillas. John is a Certified Manual Therapist. Next meeting say hello to John and help make him feel an important part of our club!

On 8/6/04 Michael Levin, Executive Director of Building Bridges to Understanding, was our guest speaker.

To Love, Honor, and Obey!

President Lionel Ruhman (Right) tells us that 50 years ago his lovely wife Elza  promised "To Love, Honor, and Obey". He said the "obey" part lasted about a week or so.  Lionel and Elza will repeat their vows tomorrow with our own Rev. Pat Farris officiating. Standing next to the newly weds is the same best man they used 50 years ago. Amazing!

Michael gave us an example of how  our middle school children contact kids from indigenous places such as Tibet. The children contact each other through technology using such tools as the Internet and digital cameras.

On 7/30/04, our own Olympian Mike O'hara gave us an insiders view of the up coming Olympics venued for Athens, Greece

Mike looks pretty good modeling his Olympic jacket he received when he was on the U.S. beach volleyball team.

Birthdays Were Celebrated!

We were ecstatic to finally get a  picture of long time member Stan Shu. Stan was caught celebrating his birthday along with new member Dave Potter.

Senior World Fitness guru Bob Delmonteque was our speaker on 7/23/04. Bob is shown signing his new book for our members.

Listed Below are a few of Bob's words of wisdom to us for maintaining a healthy life style well into our senior years :

bulletWeight lifting is very important, this helps in the prevention of osteoporosis.
bulletCardio vascular exercise is essential for maintaining a strong heart and circulatory system.
bulletDon’t eat too much. Bob has weighed 195 since he was 14. He consumes about 1800 to 2200 calories per day. The scale does not lie, if weight increases, cut back on food, increase intake if you start to lose.
bullet Don’t let your body run out of fuel. He recommends eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a small snack such as a piece fruit a few hours after breakfast and lunch.
bulletToo many carbohydrates can kill. No, no’s are such things as white breads, refined pastas, potatoes, etc. Watch out for saturated fats.
bulletHealthy living can “beat the genes” by as much as fifteen years. He gave an example of a person with parents who died at 50. He explained that that person could probably live to be  a lot older than the age of the parents passing, if Bob's rules are followed.
bulletHe recommends going to a gym or just walking for at least a half hour 5 days a week. He advises (for most of us) that going to a gym is a waste of time unless you hire the services of a trainer.
bulletDrink a lot of water.
bulletIt is important to get sun everyday. (Light complexions two or three minutes a day Ok!)
bulletDaily stretching is essential. This could prevent walking in later years with very short steps (shuffling), or  walking in a hunched over manner (Stooped). He attends weekly yoga classes.
bulletKeep you waist trim. This is where major organs are located; a large waist can cause major health problems.
bulletWake up with a good attitude; look forward to what the day brings.
bulletExercise can wake up a sleeping sex life!
bulletIt's never too late! Start living healthy today!
bulletSet goals for yourself. One of Bob’s goals is to live to be at least 120. Seeing Bob, we believe that he’s going to make his goal. We have scheduled Bob to speak to us in July of 2035, mark your calendars!

Robert Segal gave us his "Classic Craft Talk" on 7/16/04. Robert is the brains behind the world famous "HelpGuide" Web Site. Robert thanks for sharing the memories!
Robert is being congratulated by one of Santa Monica's best Optometrists Tim Shannon

On 7/9/04 brand new President Lionel Ruhman  was  jailed for too many "Ruhmanisms"

Lionel tells us his speaking coach is Yogi Berra. We believe it when he introduced Tish Tisherman as "Teesche", Alonzo Hill as "Alfonzo", Larry Maher as "Mayer", Steve Eorio as "Aerliola", Erik Jorgensborg, as "Smorgasberg", and Joe Metoyer, as Joe Montana. Any way, the meeting didn't turn out so good for Lionel when his two favorite construction buddies "Aerliola" and "Smorgasberg" locked him up for too many name construction code violations (Ruhmanisms).

Smorgasberg applies the finishing touches!
