March 10, 2006 Topic: “SPEED” IN SANTA MONICA |
|
|
|
Santa Monica -- the race course -- is a little known part of
Santa Monica's early history. The City's major streets had
an early reputation as a premier auto racing venue -- for a 10
year period in the early part of the 1900s. Rare photographs of auto races
on our streets (Ocean, San Vicente and Wilshire) in race cars driven by
Barney Oldfield, Eddie Rickenbacker and others will be presented by
Roy Aaron. A
little known fact about Santa Monica in the early Twentieth Century is
that it was a road racing venue of even greater renown than Indianapolis.
It was also the “port” of Los Angeles with an amazing rail
infrastructure. Roy Aaron will
speak about the convergence of the politics of Santa Monica and Los
Angeles with the new-fangled automobile and road racing– and how the
strange alliance of politics and business changed the face of both cities. Roy is a prominent attorney and former general counsel of Plitt Theatres who will show rarely seen images of an important part of Santa Monica's history. A must see for anyone who is interested in the history of Santa Monica or automobile racing or the streets we use everyday. |

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation has established a solid community of medical scientists helping to accelerate the reduction of the rate of mother-to-child HIV transmission, the discovery of preventative treatments and vaccine investigation. | Due to the Los Angeles Open Golf Tournament, Lunch on 2/16/06 has been moved from the Riviera Country Club to Shutter's at the Beach. Our speaker is Lee Bycel Senior Advisor for Global Strategy at International Medical Corps (IMC), a leading international humanitarian agency based in Santa Monica. |
|
|
| During his talk, Lee will discuss his three trips to a region in Africa devastated by war, civil unrest, displacement and economic blight-Chad and Sudan. For three years, the Darfur region of western Sudan has been devastated by an ongoing conflict that has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of people and forced over two million people to abandon their homes and livelihoods for refugee camps in Chad and along the Chad-Sudan border. Survivors remain vulnerable to attacks by militias that operate on the outskirts of camps and villages, as well as to the ravages of starvation, dehydration and disease as a result of extreme isolation in one of Africa’s harshest environments. Lee’s trips to the region have resulted in the development, funding and construction of health care clinics and centers providing thousands of families with clean water, basic health services, nutritional assistance, shelter and livelihood support. |

Service and served in an array of Field Command assignments. He has been
awarded both the Distinguished Intelligence Medal and the Intelligence

Jawbreaker: The
Attack on Bin Laden and Al Qaeda: A Personal Account by the CIA's Key
