September 26, 2003 -  Dr. Jaime Regalado - Public Policy Issues.
     Dr. Regalado has served as Executive Director of the Edmund G. “Pat” Brown Institute of Public Affairs since 1991.  Under Dr. Regalado’s leadership and guidance, the Pat Brown Institute, located on the campus of California State University, Los Angeles, has become a widely recognized center for applied public policy and community engagement.  Dr. Regalado also holds the rank of Professor of Political Science on the same campus.

 

September 19, 2003- Paul Cummings (here with Nat Trives) - Education is for All

Educated at Stanford University (B.A.), Harvard University (M.A.T.), and then the University of Southern California (M.A., Ph.D.), Dr. Cummins taught English at Harvard School and the Oakwood School in California as well as at UCLA. In 1970 he became Headmaster of St. Augustine’s Elementary School in Santa Monica and later a founder of the Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences. He currently holds several non-profit positions including Executive Director of the New Visions Foundation, trustee of New Roads School, trustee of Crossroads School, and trustee of P.S. Arts.

Friday, August 22, 2003 - A timely PowerPoint presentation titled   "The Village at Playa Vista." We will be given an insiders view of Playa Vista by its new President & CEO Steve Soboroff. For More info on Steve, click here!

 

Friday, August 15, 2003 we will have a timely presentation on the "Historic Recall of California Governor, Gray Davis" by local attorney and nationally known election law expert, Colleen McAndrews and the Program Chair will be Tom Larmore.
   Ms. McAndrews has served as legal counsel and treasurer to state and local political action committees, candidates and ballot measure committees, and represents Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan. She advises corporate clients regarding local campaign and lobbying ordinances prevalent in Southern California, including the complex Los Angeles City Ethics Ordinance.
   Be at lunch Friday to give a warm Rotary welcome to Colleen! 

 

Friday August 8, 2003, we will have our annual "State of the City" address by City Manager, Susan McCarthy and the Program Chair will be Chamber President & CEO, Kathy Dodson
Susan E. McCarthy began her career with the State of Wisconsin, working with a team of engineers and planners to develop a highway network data and information system for the Department of Transportation.  She joined the City of Santa Monica in the mid-70’s, working with the municipal bus system.  McCarthy administered the City’s employment and training programs and then served as Personnel Director and chief negotiator prior to leaving the City in 1985. 

After several years with the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History Foundation, McCarthy returned to the City as Director of Community and Cultural Services, a superagency responsible for Human Services, Parks, Recreation, the Civic Auditorium and Cultural Affairs.  She became Assistant City Manager in 1996 and City Manager in 1999.  

McCarthy received her B. A. from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts and holds a Master’s degree in Communications Management from the Annenberg School of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

bulletFriday, July 25, 2003 we will have our first "Craft Talks" for the year, in the persons of Diane Margolin and Phil Tirone. Two of our outstanding Rotarians, who will give us a glimpse of who they are and how they got to where they are. Jack Siegal is the Program Chair. 

Dr. Dick Rice, Lionel Ruhman and VP Nat Trives will follow on July 18, 2003 with a report on the Mazatlan, Mexico Wheel Chair Distribution efforts of the Wheel Chair Foundation and the Rotary Clubs of Foster City and Santa Monica.

 

Thanks to Phil Tirone we are off and running for our 2003-04 SM Rotary Program Year. We open with a Celebrate America theme on July 11, 2003 welcoming our new President, Dee Menzies to a colorful splash of red white and blue with flags flying everywhere. Phil found a powerful motivational speaker, Tim O’Brien who will provide the inaugural message for Dee’s year.
