Suzan Allbritton has had a varied working career working in retail, computer software, finance and financial systems, and finally healthcare.  Most recently, se was the Executive Director for the not-for-profit Hospice Partners of Southern California – starting the company with no other employees and going through the licensing process that enabled it to provide extraordinary end of life care.  That assignment has ended, and she is currently looking for other opportunities in finance and/or operations.

While her parents were supposed to be getting a degree, Suzan was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (and later took Tuscaloosa as her Indian Princess name). The family moved to Hermosa Beach when she was only two, and she grew up in the South Bay, finally graduating from Mira Costa High School. From there, Suzan moved to San Luis Obispo to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, graduating with a degree in Business and Computer Science. Suzan was fortunate enough to continue to live on the Central Coast for many years.

Eventually returning to Los Angeles, Suzan earned her MBA from Pepperdine University and became a member of the international honor society, Beta Gamma Sigma. She went to work in the health care arena, eventually discovering her passion for providing quality end-of-life care.  She continues to sit on the Physician Order for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) Grantee Committee – which will hopefully lead to more people’s last wishes being honored.

Suzan’s hobbies include rollerblading, puttering around in the yard, , travel and she looks forward to getting back to scuba diving.  She lives in Venice, with her husband, Ken Frank, an elderly cat named pumpkin, and her 93 year old mother-in-law.

Rodolfo "Rudy" Alvarez began his Rotary career on this birthday (October 23) in 1983, when he joined the Rotary Club of Westwood Village, where he established a long track record of club service, including serving as Westwood’s 75th President.   Rudy has had exemplary service to  District 5280, serving in its Leadership Mentor Program, District Conference Planning and Strategic Planning committees.  He served as Group Study Exchange Team Leader to Italy, has twice been Chair of the Ethics Kaffeeklatch Series, and was Executive Aide (2005-06) to District Governor-Elect Ingo Werk -- a position that many Santa Monica Rotarians got to know Rudy.  In September,  2007, Rudy will be in Cartagena, Colombia as a Special Guest at the XXXVI Rotary Institute for Zone 21, encompassing all of Latin America.  Currently, Rudy serves on District 5280 Finance Committee and District 5280 Policy and Guidelines Committee.  Rudy is also a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.

Immediately following graduation from high school in San Antonio, Texas, Rudy served three years active duty in the United States Marine Corps, followed by five years reserve.  He entered college with Korean GI Bill support, earning the Certificate of European Studies from the Institute for American Universities, Aix-en-Provence, France (1960), Bachelor of Arts degree from San Francisco State University (1961), and both MA (1964) and PhD (1966) from University of Washington (Seattle).  Rudy launched his research and teaching career at Yale University (1966-72) and was appointed to the faculty at the University of California Los Angeles in 1972, where he is now Emeritus Professor of Sociology.  He speaks several languages and has visited Rotary Clubs across District 5280, the United States, and many countries as well as participated in Rotary’s International Conventions.  Appointed in 1968, he is now the longest serving member of the Board of Trustees of the Institute for American Universities in Aix-en-Provence, France.

Melissa K. Dagodag
is a native of California and attended Stanford University, where she earned both her Master's and Bachelor's degrees in English. After graduating from Stanford University, she owned and operated her own product design and manufacturing business for several years.  From this business she gained valuable hands-on experience which continues to enhance her skills as a business attorney. She decided to attend law school after feeling the frustration of seeing her designs and other tangible representations of her ideas stolen by others. Throughout attending The UCLA School of Law, she kept in mind her ideals of protecting creative embodiments of work, for herself, her friends and her colleagues. After graduating from The UCLA School of Law, she gained a great deal of helpful work experience at a prestigious Los Angeles law firm, in-house as Vice President of a small music publishing company and in-house as Business Affairs Counsel at a prominent fashion company. In early 2006 she opened her own law office. To this day, she endeavors to adhere to the ideals which brought her to the practice of law in the first place: helping to protect the work of creative and entrepreneurial people.

Christopher Darrow is an attorney who has been practicing law in California since 1976.  He specializes in Intellectual Property Law, particularly patent and trademark law.  After graduating from the University of Toledo in 1968 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, he worked as an aerospace engineer on the anti-missile missile program being developed at that time.  He moved to Santa Monica in 1970 and worked inside the McDonnell Douglas facility at the Santa Monica airport.  He graduated from Whittier College School of Law in 1976, and now works at the Greenberg Traurig law firm in the Water Garden.  He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association.

Janie Yuguchi Gates is a Southern California native and has lived in Santa Monica for nearly twenty years.  She raised her two daughters here -- Katy (who’s completed three years at Bard College, NY, and will finish her senior year at Temple University’s program in Japan, next year) and Kelsey (a sophomore at CSU San Francisco).   Janie received her B.A. from Whittier College and  M.A. from the University of the Pacific in speech pathology.  She has been the principal of Olympic High School, the Adult Education Center, and the Off Campus Learning Center of the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District for the past five years.  Olympic provides alternative/ed options programs for students who have difficulty succeeding at a normal campus.  Prior to working for the local district, Janie worked for 27 years for the Los Angeles County Office of Education in special education, juvenile court and community schools, and alternative education.  She also worked in the areas of Indian education and K-3 reading with districts in Southern California, funded by the US Department of Education.

Janie loves to travel, has a large circle of close friends, and makes jewelry - all of which keep her busy in her free time.

Avedis Guerboian, who also goes by “Avo”, has become a new member after convincing his dad, Eddie Guerboian (also known as “Mr. Kiwanis”) that our Club was right for him.   Avo was raised knowing  that Kiwanians and Rotarians have a friendly rivalry but also is aware that  parental influence should only go so far in life's important decisions. Avo recently joined his family business, Readers Fine Jewelers, and continues the tradition created five generations ago of his family in the jewelry business.  Avedis is a graduate of Cal State Northridge with a B.Sc. in Marketing and currently is pursuing a Graduate Diamond Degree from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).  In his spare time, Avo loves to draw and create animation, and enjoys novels and the running of mini-marathons.  Avedis achieved a black belt degree in the martial arts style, Tang Soo Do, at the age of 13 (perhaps an asset in allowing  him to select the service club of his choice)!  He feels very fortunate to be a part of a wonderful organization and looks forward to meeting more Rotarians and being active.

Jane Beaumont Hall is an attorney in private practice in Santa Monica, with an emphasis on Estate planning, Wills, Trusts and Mediation.   Jane has practiced law not only in California, but also Hawaii and Oregon where she began her legal career.  In addition to numerous Santa Monica organizations, Jane is a  long term volunteer for the Angeles County Girl Scouts and is an Honored Mediator for the Centinela Valley Juvenile Diversion Project.

Kathryn Hall moved to Santa Monica seven years ago from Seattle where she lived for many years, raising  her two daughters, Julia 29 and Elizabeth 26.  Elizabeth, who still lives in Seattle, graduated from University of Washington and now works in their development department, raising money.  Julia is a professional ballerina at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, where she is one of their main stars.

Kathryn is an artist, an American Realist Master, who has been showing for twenty years. She specializes in portraits, landscapes and mythological paintings in oil and pastel.  She took some drawing and painting classes, but was mainly self-taught through studying and copying old masters.  She recently had a show and is presently writing a book, Art and the Soul, to be out next year.

In addition to art study, Kathryn has a BA in English Lit from OSU, an MA in English and psychology from Reed College, two years of doctoral study in English from UC Davis and an MBA from Seattle University.  The family motto is, when in doubt, go get another degree.   Kathryn's interests include fashion design, math and the origin of words.

Kathryn knew she wanted to be a Rotary member when she accompanied Sally Pai to the 2007 Thanksgiving dinner for the police department.  These were the sort of people, the sort of caring organization she wanted to be a part of.  Besides, her sister, Jane Hall, told her it was a great group, and Kathryn already had many friends who were in Rotary.

Judy Iriye was born and raised in Southern California, having moved from Long Beach to Lakewood at the age of four.  After graduating from Mayfair High School, her parents packed up her bags and bid her well at LAX as she flew to Boston to begin four years at Harvard College.  Judy concentrated in sociology and East Asian Studies and spent her “free” time playing on the varsity volleyball team, which she co-captained her senior year.  (Yes, Judy is about 5’4” on a good day, but it was the Ivy League after all.)

During her senior year at Harvard, Judy was honored to receive a Rotary International Fellowship to study abroad in Tokyo, Japan.  Judy spent 1996-1997 studying Japanese and economics at Keio University and regularly attended meetings of her host club, Tokyo Ikebukuro West.  Needless to say, the Japanese Rotarians were incredibly generous and gracious hosts.

In 1997, Judy returned to Los Angeles to attend law school at UCLA, from which she graduated in 2000.  She immediately began practicing in the area of employment and labor law and is currently a senior associate in the Santa Monica office of Curiale Dellaverson Hirschfeld & Kraemer, an employment law boutique firm.  Judy assists employers in a wide range of employment matters, from employee handbooks to accommodation of disabled employees to wage/hour matters.

Like many people, Judy juggles working full time with being a wife (to her husband, David Feldman) and mom (to daughter, Saya (who just turned three but is easily going on 13)).  Judy, David, and Saya enjoy traveling – which means that Judy and David are gluttons for punishment as Saya has traveled at least 50,000 miles since birth.  (Thank goodness for portable DVD players, headphones, and courtesy drinks.)  Last December, the three went to Tokyo, saw friends from their respective time in Tokyo, and visited the widow of Judy’s Rotary Club host and their granddaughter – which inspired Judy to follow through on her desire to become a Rotary Club member.

Roxana Janka is a PR and media relations professional with more than 10 years experience. She is the Director of PR and Client Relations at BrandCulture Company, a brand and organizational development consultancy. Roxana recently implemented the City of Santa Monica’s public education campaign to raise awareness of the no-smoking laws in the City’s outdoor public spaces.

Roxana was born in Tehran, Iran and is the oldest of three sisters. She came to the U.S. as a young child with her family during the Revolution in 1979. They settled in Orlando, Florida where she was raised, eventually attended college at the University of Central Florida and then began her career in public relations.

After some time, Roxana and her then-boyfriend Chris decided it was time to live abroad and experience more of the world before it was too late. Together they embarked on a yearlong sabbatical to Barcelona, Spain where Roxana bartended at the Hard Rock Café, studied the language, traveled and became an aficionado of Spanish wine, culture and cuisine.

The adventure continued with a move to New York City where she lived in the bohemian East Village and continued practicing PR and media relations in the country’s fast-paced, #1 media market.

After enduring three freezing-cold winters in Manhattan, Roxana and Chris married and relocated to Santa Monica in May 2007. She found the city to be a perfect mix of cosmopolitan culture like in NYC but with balmy, sunny weather similar to where she grew up in Florida. Finally, she and Chris found a city to call home.

Roxana and her husband recently bought a condo in Santa Monica where they live with their canine child Kahlo, a 95lb German Shepherd Dog. They plan to add to their family with human children in next few years.

Not only did Lawrence and Pamela become life partners, they became business partners.  Their business model focuses in the creation and development of symbiotic business relationships, creating new revenue generated as result of savvy internet marketing and telemarketing (offshore and locally) which, in turn, elevate the exposure and profitability of enterprises which had not previously taken advantage of new technologies or co-venture business opportunities.

Lawrence seeks to develop his mind and soul through meditation and spirituality workshops, retreats and books. In his free time he pursues various interests which include traveling, philanthropy, meeting good people, as well as partaking in good food and wine. Laurel Rosen - You might have seen her around Santa Monica coordinating groups at The Lobster Restaurant (as its former head of marketing), voicing her ideas on how to help the homeless and coordinating one of the city’s largest food events. But since Fall 2007, Laurel Rosen is newly appointed the President and CEO of the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce.    In addition to her work with the Chamber,  Laurel has been involved with the Board of the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, “I Know Santa Monica” branding committee and represents Santa Monica around the world as a part of “Team Santa Monica” to encourage tourism.  She’s also been very active with local non-profits, including the Ocean Park Community Center’s Turning Point program,  the annual Bowl-a-Thon raising funds for homeless services, assisting cancer survivors and sponsoring activities for other organizations such as the Police Activities League.

Laurel grew up in New York in a family of 10 children which included her twin brother, Larry, who also gravitated to Santa Monica.  Two of her sisters are cancer survivors which has been part of the reason for Laurel’s tireless community efforts.  However, Laurel’s route to Santa Monica and the Chamber was not direct.  Laurel studied in the psychology and medical treatment fields in New Mexico and lived a number of years the Enchanted State, where she often returns. She later developed a career in alternative and holistic medicine which brought her to California (Northern, at first) and her training and professional background in these areas continues to be a major part of her active personal life (yoga, meditation, working out, roller blading).  Laurel lives in Culver City with her dog and cat  both of whom reportedly have the same high energy level as Laurel.

Lynette Shishito
has been a full-time business professor at Santa Monica College since 1975, while also serving in various administrative positions as department coordinator and director of certain business-related grants.    At one time, Lynnette had her own business as a computer training consultant, which, interestingly, brought her into the homes of Joan Rivers and Jane Fonda to teach their daughters computer skills for college.  Her desire and fun is in teaching.  This is why she has enjoyed being the faculty advisor for the SMC Rotaract Club for about 14 years.  Lynnette feels very honored to have been made an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Santa Monica.

Lynnette and her husband live in the Sunset Mesa neighborhood of Malibu.  Their dogs are their children.  She also enjoys helping out at a nearby rescue shelter where she has taken in three rescued cocker spaniels so far.  Growing up in Minnesota, Lynnette goes back to visit family a few times every year.  More weather-friendly, however, are visits to her husband's family in La Jolla and Hawaii.  Lynnette's interests include golfing, traveling and doing volunteer work.

David Snow is the Executive Director of Upward Bound House, a Santa Monica-based non-profit that provides housing and supportive services to families with minor children and to low-income seniors.   www.upwardboundhouse.org   Many SM Rotary members are involved with Upward Bound House, including Kris Andresen (who sponsored David for the Club) and Patricia Farris who both serve on the Board of Directors, and Judy Neveau, who is a member of the agency’s Advisory Committee.

David is a transplant to Los Angeles.  He grew up in Connecticut, where he went to Yale and met his future wife.  He spent time in Washington DC, working as a management consultant, and moved out to LA where he received his MBA from UCLA.  While he misses the first snowfall of the year back east, he’s a west coast convert.   He lives in Westwood with his wife Cheryl, who is a partner at the entertainment law firm Gang Tyre Ramer & Brown.  He spends his free time chasing after his three-year old son Sam.
