CONTRIBUTING INFORMATION BY JON KEMP
OCTOBERFAIR AT ST. MONICA’S CHURCH
Once again the spirit of success, (synonymous with The Rotary Club of Santa Monica) prevailed at the annual Chili-Cook Off celebration. Thanks to Phil Tirone Chairman, and our Chief Chef Spyros Dellaportas, our club won the gold for the third year. We were presented with the Best Organization Chili Cook Off plaque. The real winners were the people who ate Spyros’s Chili. Donna Dellaportas is lucky to have a Spyros as her “In House Chef”. Others in attendance were June Doy, Kay and John Lehne, Marilyn and Paul Leoni, Donna Margolin, Elza and Lionel Ruhman, Kathleen and Bob Sullivan, Msgr. Lloyd Torgersen (for divine guidance), Allan Young and other Rotary fans. What a nice evening of fellowship while we were helping to support our community through St. Monica’s annual fall fund raising event.
HELPGUIDE
The
Helpguide team, founded by Robert Segal, has been very busy over the summer
shaping and molding a fresh new look for the web site. The result is a redefined

visitors each day. Thus far

revised articles comprising of valuable information and helpful resources abound
throughout the newly launched site. Other fine Rotarians on the committee are
Nancy Freedman-Vice Chair, Susan Annett, June Doy, Ann Greenspun, Tod Lipka,

Congratulations, and thank you on behalf of our club for your success in
meeting these challenging people needs. You
are all special.
OUR WEEKLY CITIZENSHIP AWARD - THOMAS “TIM” LEISEN
Our club shall each week honor a person in our community (“for service above self”) a good citizenship award. These persons, not Rotarians are many and should be recognized, Tim Leisen is such a man. His dedication to his fellowman is endless, St. John’s Hospital volunteer, the American Legion, the Veterans Administration, assistance to our Rotary immunization clinic, etc. In general we are honored to know him. Tim is the first of a long list of eligible and worthy citizens in Santa Monica.
TWO ‘FINE GUYS’
(Worth a million, but only fined a hundred dollars each)
Jim & Sharen Dyer and Jack and Holly Gregory recently enjoyed trips to Europe. Jim Dyer had the pleasure of doing business in Amsterdam, Rome, Palermo and Zurich. Jim, (past vice President) is a Santa Monica native and has been employed by IBM since 1969. He has been in our club since 1986, sponsored by Bill Werner.
Jack and Holly Gregory made it their business to do pleasure in Slovenia, Hungary. I am not completely sure about the “Cow Ball Event”. Is that like the Swallows returning to Capistrano? Jack, a Paul Harris fellow and also a past vice President, and Rotarian since 1980 is a certified financial planner. Employed by Jefferson Pilot Securities, since 1989. Jack was sponsored by Ted Fach.
SEPTEMBER - THE CONSTITUTIONAL OBSERVANCE MONTH
Enclosed is a copy of a speech by Benjamin Franklin delivered on September 17, 1787, which was the last day of the constitutional convention. This enclosure is to help us honor this wonderful document. (OUR CONSTITUTION) given to us by our founding fathers.
What a great service and gift to our country this humble man gave through his penned speech, as he shared his wisdom in such a convincing manner, as expressed in the last paragraph.

IN MY DREAMS
I dream, I should live so long, that I may hear a Political aspirant say “These are my beliefs, I would like your vote, however if you feel otherwise, be comfortable with my opponent, as he or she is also worthy of the office”.
