MUSIC AT THE MASONIC!!
Esther M. Johnson Music Awards
The Rotary Club of Santa Monica held its annual Esther M. Johnson, Music Awards Program at 12:00noon Friday, February 20, 2004 at the Masonic Center, in Santa Monica. The program featured four talented young artists from local high schools.
Hee-Seung Lee, 12th Grade Student from New Roads High School, playing Scherzo Op.31 No. 2 by Chopin on the piano held the audience in the palm of her with a flawless performance that earned her 1st Place and a $500.00 check; Luka G. Oida , 11th Grade Student from Malibu High School performed Masks Op. 40 by Robert Muczynski on the piano with technical excellence tying Micah K. Schub, 12th Grade Student from Santa Monica High School who performed Concerto #1 by Koussevitzky on Bass, for the 1st Runner-up position and a $200.00 check for each performer; and Taran A. Huffman, 10th Grade Student from Concord High School played two pieces on Clarinet, one: Pastourelle by Maurice Faillenot and the other: Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaron Copeland earning a 2nd Runner-Up and a $100.00 check.
The three judges were Rotarians: Patricia A. Bofird, Nancy Freedman and Monika White
All four winners will be invited back on Friday, June 4, 2004 to receive their plaques for today’s performance while joining the Rotary Club of Santa Monica’s scholastic and service awards winners on that day.

Shots for Tots& Teens Clinic
On March 6, 2004 the Rotary Club will again be protecting children against disease. Saint John's Health Center provides free immunizations for infants, adolescents and teenagers up to 18 years of age. The State of California requires that all children be up-to-date on their immunizations to attend school or childcare centers.

ROTARY READS TO KIDS WEEK:
We will be signing up for “Rotary Reads to Kids Week” on February 27th, March 5th and March 12th. Rotary Reads Week will be March 22nd to 26th, for children K, 1 and 2 at Edison, McKinley, John Muir and Rogers elementary schools.
Please plan to sign-up, this is a great opportunity to enrich the lives of our children !
ANNUAL BOOK DRIVE
Our Annual Book Drive will be March 5th and 12th, if everyone will please bring new or gently used Adult Books for Seniors at Culver City’s Rotary Plaza and our Santa Monica Upward Bound House. Books in Spanish and Russian are especially needed in addition to books in English.
We also will collect books for K – 3.
LITERACY LUNCHEON – SEE THE EDUCATION SECRETARY
Our Annual Literacy Luncheon Program will be March 19th with Mayor Richard Riordan, our State Secretary for Education. District Governor John Colville and immediate past DG Rick Mendoza will also attend. Please bring your friends and colleagues to this excellent program !
