Coming Our Way
Remember to return to Rotary on January 10, 2003, because that’s when Gary Small, MD, author of The Memory Bible, will share his research and his wisdom with us. An expert on the subject of memory, Dr. Small notes that while it often diminishes with age, research has demonstrated that memory training techniques can improve memory performance at any age. Dr. Small is the Director of the Center on Aging at UCLA, and has first-hand insights into what we all experience at one time or another. If you forgot what you had for dinner last night, or where you put your car keys, tie a string around your finger so you’ll show up on January 10th to hear more.
Harmonious Harmony
There’s nothing like four-part harmony to illustrate what pure voices can evoke. Thanks to the Santa Monica Oceanaires for their holiday medley in true Barbershop style. And special hugs and kisses to President Bill Crookston and his ever-lovely Kathleen for generously donating the honorarium that enabled us to be serenaded so beautifully.
In Memorium
Our condolences to Jim Haljun on the passing of his mother, Nancy. The Rotary Club of Westwood Village informed us that long-time and well-regarded member Douglas Dell Desch passed away in December. Santa Monica community pillar and Kiwanian Pete Barrett expired as well. An official announcement of an appropriate memorial will be forthcoming from the Barrett family.
Heads Up
Lending their usual flair at the front were Phil Tirone to introduce guests and visiting Rotarians, and Keith Magee to give the invocation. Karen Baker twinkled the ivories, and Clyde Smith led us in song and Pledge. The tables looked especially lovely adorned with potted poinsettias, compliments of Klaus Mennekes, who always does things with such style.
Of Significance
|
Roll up your sleeve when you arrive at the Riviera Country Club on January 10th, because the Red Cross is conducting a blood drive in the ballroom. The Executive Director of the Santa Monica Red Cross is Rotarian Tom Miskimen, who wants you to know that someone needs a blood transfusion every two seconds. Make a reservation by calling Carolyn O’Brien at 454-6591 ext. 301. |
|
Norma Barnes delivered a whopping 253 books to seniors, and 500 books to children, as a result of her wildly successful book drive. Rotarians are truly generous. |
|
And speaking of generosity, Frank Lavac proudly announced that the one-day Red Kettle Day tally for the Salvation Army was $4,058, which exceeded last year’s take. John McIntire and Dick Lawrence hosted the counting party. |
|
Despite his seemingly familiar countenance, it was indeed Santa who delighted the children and spread hearty cheer. Their excited faces were gift enough. |
The Welcome Mat
The lone visiting Rotarian was Kay Lehne, President of Westside Sunrise Rotary, and spouse of John. New members Rev. Ronald L. Williams of the First African Methodist Episcopalian Church, and Russ Warner, in residential real estate, were welcomed. Guests who enjoyed their holiday with us were Elza and Adraina Ruhman, Jeff and Zach Tisherman, Hugo Rosenstein, Erika Gorms, Juan Llaro, Tyler Pritchard, Sharon Dyer, Mary Pat Cooney, Lucy and Cacely Schraeder, Mike Russell and Steve and Kristen Lehne.
The More Things Change…
A teary farewell and an ovation of thanks were bestowed upon Barbara Hopper, outgoing Executive Secretary. She is wished all the best as she adds yet another page to her career calendar. Welcomes were extended to Linda Gray, incoming Executive Secretary.

As we enter another year, it’s important to
remember that we can’t turn back the clock, but we can rewind it.
