Professional

Ø      Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office

o       1992 – 2000 Los Angeles County District Attorney – Headed the largest local prosecutorial office in the United States with more than 1100 prosecutors, 200 investigators and support staff of almost 2000. The office annually prosecuted between 280,000 and 310,00 cases and had a budget of approximately $260 million.***

o       1989- 1992 Head Deputy District Attorney in charge of a suburban branch office in charge of a staff of 30 -35 prosecutors.

o       1984 - 1988 Chief Deputy District Attorney - (number two position in the office) with the responsibility of running the office on a day-to-day basis

o       1982 - 1984 Head Deputy District Attorney in charge of a trial team of 35 prosecutors

o       1977 - 1982 Head Deputy District Attorney in charge of the Special Investigations Division - sole jurisdiction for the investigation and prosecution of elected officials, police officers and other government employees

o       1972 - 1977 helped form the nation's first District Attorney's office Consumer and Environmental Protection Division (to enforce false advertising, unfair competition, antitrust and environmental laws)

o       1968 -1972 prosecuted trials from DUI to murder and conspiracy 

 

Ø      Political Campaigns

o       December, 2000 – July, 2000 worked full time on my son, Eric’s successful election campaign for the Los Angeles City Council

o       February – November, 1968 – Southern California campaign manager for Senator Eugene McCarthy’s presidential campaign

 

Ø      Current  (In December, 2000 I left office as District Attorney after an unsuccessful attempt at a third term)

o       Completing a book, IRON: BUILDING THE WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL, about the ironworkers who are building the new concert hall in Los Angeles – the book contains my black and white photographs of the iron workers at the construction site and my text on the project

o       Writing op-ed and essay about the need to help the world’s poorest democracies. (This is based on my experiences participating in two Hilton Foundation fact-finding missions in West Africa during 2001.)

o       Developing a foundation to keep Latino and African-American students in school to complete their high school education. 

Personal

Born and raised in South Central Los Angeles; father, Salvador, born in Mexico, was a barber for 40 years in Los Angeles; mother, Juanita, one of 19 children whose parents emigrated from Mexico, was a meat packer for 23 years. 

Married for 38 years to Sukey Garcetti, Executive Director, Roth Family Foundation; daughter, Dana, is a Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney and a yoga instructor; son, Eric, is the elected Los Angeles City Council member representing the 13th district and was a professor of political science at Occidental College and the University of Southern California. He was also a Rhodes Scholar.

***Most meaningful accomplishments as District Attorney:

 

Ø      Placed a nationwide focus on the need for domestic violence prevention:

o        Established the nation’s first county toll free hot line where victims of domestic violence can get immediate help;

o     Helped secure domestic violence sensitivity training for judges;

o     Developed a protocol with police agencies, hospitals and battered women’s’ shelters on how to handle domestic violence cases;

o     Secured the passage of numerous laws to assist victims of domestic violence;

o     Substantially increased the prosecution success rate in domestic violence cases;

o     Convinced judges to establish dedicated domestic violence courts;

o     Obtained funding, pro bono public relations, and corporate in-kind contributions for a sustained domestic violence awareness campaign;

o     Most importantly, the above efforts were in part responsible for a dramatic drop in domestic violence murders (more than 40% from 1992 to 2000)

 

Ø      Created the nation=s first District Attorney’s Crime Prevention Bureau with the focus of keeping kids in school and away from gangs and drugs;

 

Ø      Initiated specific crime prevention programs, e.g., the Abolish Chronic         Truancy program;

 

Ø      Established the nation=s first anti-stalking unit and obtained funding for a          web site and college campus stalking awareness campaign;

 

Ø      Developed special prosecutorial units that focused on previously ignored crimes, e.g., hate crimes, elder abuse, child physical abuse, Asian gangs, computer crime, immigration fraud, auto insurance fraud and public corruption.

 

Ø      Forever changed the face of the L.A.D.A.=s office by significantly increasing the hiring and promotion of women, minorities, and gay and lesbian lawyers.
